What to Know

Critics Consensus

I Know This Much is True's relentlessly grim plotting makes it a difficult watch, but the strength of Mark Ruffalo's dual performances is enough to make it a dark tale worth tuning into.

Without a doubt one of the favorites of the year. J M This 6 part HBO limited series is HEAVY stuff - with a bold capital H. If you prefer a little levity with your drama, you might want to look elsewhere. This has mental illness, child abuse, alcoholism, death, car accidents and falling off of ladders. So, if you're in it for the long haul, this is a rewarding and involving drama that deserves to be seen if for no other reason than Ruffalo's remarkable double performance. It's nearly incompressible for the mind to comprehend that the same actor is playing both roles. The basic plot revolves around Dominick Birdsey and his relationship with his mentally challenged twin brother Thomas. Throughout the six episodes, though, we go back to their childhoods, the young life of their grandfather, and Dominick's life with his now-ex wife. The best scenes in the limited series revolve around Dominick's attempts to release Thomas from a mental institution. The acting in these scenes is wonderful, including a successful dramatic turn by O'Donnell. Not everything works quite as well - the scenes with the grandfather could have been condensed, and there is a very awkward performance by Juliette Lewis that thankfully only pops up sporadically in a couple episodes. But if you love family dysfunction as much as I do, this will give you a lot to feast upon. - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook) Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Claudiu I It has a slow pace, sometimes too slow and BAM something extraordinary happens without a warning. Sometimes is almost painful to watch, to see such suffering and guilt. The main character had a long way to walk through an avalanche of difficulties and he is just a poor human, with mistakes and regrets, but with a good heart. Superb writing and dialogs, very good acting performance. Despite all the drama, at the end is not grim and hopeless. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member You must be ready for an intense shower of heavy emotions. Amazing Ruffalo. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Magnificent acting from the cast especially Mark Ruffalo. The dialogue is also incredibly well written and the arguments in the show are some of the most captivating scenes I've ever witnessed in my life. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Intricate picture of love and family dealing with struggles and trauma. Mark Ruffalo was brilliant in this.
